RIP Analogue telly

6 July 2010

tv_3004_narrowweb__300x373,0 Like Ken Dodd, it’s almost 85 years old. Unlike Ken Dodd, its days are well and truly numbered. We speak of course, about the analogue television set.

It has been confirmed that there are no analogue tellies to be found in major British high street stores any more, as the race towards the digital switchover gathers momentum. Last month, for the first time, zero sales of analogue television sets were recorded.

Stats show that out of 26.8 million UK TV homes, 23.8 million of them already have digital – via DTT, satellite, or cable. The big analogue switch off is due to be completed in 2012. Kinda sad.

Some questions – when was the last time you called out the television repair man? Is there anything more amazing than the sight of the inner workings of a CRT telly or is that just a childhood thing? Are we all just getting old? 3D telly – that’s a load of old shite really isn’t it?

Your thoughts…?

RIP analogue telly in UK! They still sell loads of them in some countries where LCD and PLASMA technology are less affordable.

We still have an analogue CRT telly. That's because the contrast on LCD and Plasma is shit and they don't do well with standard definition sources which is still most things unless you pay through the nose to watch rubbish in HD on Sky.

Did you know Ken Dodd's dad's dog's dead?

We had a 32" CRT and it was the size of a small house and was heavier than Tony Blair's wallet. Bloody good riddance to the pair of em

I don't get it? Aren't analogue and digital terms to describe the input source rather than the TV itself? Like terrestrial is analogue whilst sky is digital. You can still watch sky on CRT tvs....

Yeah you're right, CRT isn't dead its just the analogue tuners that are built into them that are now redundant. I have loads of old consoles and CRT's are the best option for picture quality as they look crap through my plasma. Also I watch SD Cable TV through a CRT for the same reason.

Will they start selling portable sky boxes to go with portable tvs?
