Winter Fuel Payments to be Extended With Rising Energy Costs

9 November 2008

Consumer Focus, independent consumer champion in the UK, said that the government should extend winter fuel payments to more people, in order to mitigate the effect of rising energy costs.

Winter fuel payments are available to over-60s and Consumer Focus says they should also be available to those on lower incomes who are eligible for cold weather payments.

Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee had previously closed its inquiry into energy efficiency and fuel poverty, but announced yesterday plans to reopen it.

The committee has compiled a report containing written evidence on the real problem that exists with fuel poverty, available here.

It is painfully clear that government intervention is needed to help those families who will not be able to afford spiking energy costs this winter.
