Car hire companies are hitting customers with 'sneaky charges'

18 April 2013

car Which!!! don't like car hire companies and have said that too many of them are confusing us jerks with "sneaky charges". They looked at a host of companies offering rental in Spain and found that a number of them weren't disclosing additional costs until after the booking had been confirmed.

More than half of Which!!!!!!!!! customers said they were confused by the time they got to the end of the booking process, and unsure of how much they were going to get charged. There was particular confusion about charges for a full tank of fuel, which is a compulsory charge.

The costs of optional excess damage waivers also confounded many, which is not to be sniffed at as sometimes, this can whack £100 onto your bill.

"The car hire industry is taking customers for a ride by hitting them with sneaky charges not included in the headline price," said Richard Lloyd, the executive director of Which!!!!!!! "Car hire companies must be more transparent and upfront about their fees so people can make an informed choice."

The main areas that need to be clearer focus on the cost of the excess waiver and what it covers, the cost of compulsory fuel, how much additional extras will be such as sat navs and additional drivers.

Take 101 pics of any car you return. If possible use a card with a low credit limit to stop high charges being applied. And if that fails rent another car from them, take out full excess waiver and accidentally have your foot slip on the accelerator in their car park totally a few other cars.
