Tax dodgers mugshots released online!
HMRC, in their infinite wisdom, have decided to publish the mugshots of some tax criminals in a bid to try and hunt them down like dogs. The names on the Most Wanted list are described as “tax criminals who have absconded after being charged with a crime or during trial,” and it is the first time the HMRC has published photos in this way.
Don't suppose they've put a photo of Vodafone or the various tax exiles in the cabinet on that list, have they?
David Gauke, the Exchequer Secretary, said to a chorus of sarcastic laughter: "The Government is absolutely committed to tackling tax evasion and fraud. These criminals have collectively cost the taxpayer over £765m and HMRC will pursue them relentlessly."
"We hope that publishing their pictures in this way will enable members of the public to contribute to the effort to catch them."
So, if the powers-that-be aren't naming and shaming people in business or celebrities (Jimmy Carr aside), who is on the list? Well, there's a rogue's gallery featuring Hussain Chohan who was convicted for his role in a £200million fraud which revolved around importing cigarettes. In fact, most of the Most Wanted are involved in VAT fraud and tobacco.
Apart from the exciting Cesare Selvini, who is wanted for smuggling platinum bars, which is much more like it!
