Forget jet packs and flying cars – how would you like to become a living, breathing ‘authentication token’? Well, the good people at Proteus Digital Health in California have developed a swallowable pill containing a chip that can transmit your personal details and passwords to the device you’re using.

The sensor is indigestible and has a battery inside that is – get this – POWERED BY STOMACH ACID. Once you’re remembered that your Spotify password is dothraki3452, it comes out in your poo. Ta da!

Obviously the technology also has potential to identify individuals on a wide scale – like an internal fingerprint. And it could help do away with passwords altogether, making identity theft a thing of the past.

Motorola executive and engineer Regina Dugan, who is championing the technology said:

‘Despite the fact there is a lot of information about you on your smartphone, which makes you far more prone to identity theft. After 40 years of advances in computation, we’re still authenticating the same way we did years ago – passwords. In fact it’s worse, the average users does it 39 times a day and it takes them 2.3 seconds every time they do it. Power users will do it up to 100 times a day. Motorola is thinking of a whole variety of options for how to do better at authentication.’

But do human beings want a battery lurking around inside them? I personally would rather risk ID theft and write my passwords on a Post It note…

What happens if someones steals your stash of id pills?
Or do you only have one and have to keep swallowing it?

  3. What’s to stop someone scanning you and reproducing your ID details as they pass you?
