Virgin Media block access to Rapidshare and Megaupload

virgin media logo2 300x281 Virgin Media block access to Rapidshare and MegauploadThe piracy community is a bit like Doctor Who – as soon as the waters get choppy, it rolls around on the floor for a bit before growing a new face and getting on with what it was doing.

Now that the governments and the record companies are targeting bit torrent file sharing, more and more naughty sound-thieves are getting their new albums from zipped files hosted by file-sharing sites such as Rapidshare and Megaupload.

But we’ve heard that overnight, Virgin Media have started blocking those two sites along with other, perfectly legitimate filesharing sites. Granted, some of the traffic to those sites comes from naughty boys and girls looking to nab stuff for free but the sites are also a godsend for people who need to send files that are too bulky for email. You know, as part of their work.

On the Virgin Media forum, one user said: “I need RS as I store all my website graphics packages I make for websites on their servers.” So, erm, well done Virgin Media. Not. You utter clowns.

The latest is that Virgin’s technical support are saying that it was all a big mistake, and that they’ll be sorting it all out later this morning. Hmmm. In the meantime, if you’re a Virgin Media customer, you can still access Rapidshare by replacing ‘http://’ with ‘https://’ in the site address. We’ll see how long it takes them to put things right…

    Yeah, blocking legit sites is bad. But why can’t the guy store his stuff on other sites. There are loads of free ones available.

    God bless you Andy Dawson, Sir! Have been sitting up all nite expecting the MiB to turn up, after convincing myself it was only me being blocked!

    Lets be honest, UK cable internet customers are usually from one of two groups, either people who went with them for a package deal and got it all bundled in and advanced users who have chosen their service for a reason and will sometimes need access to these sites and not always for illegal purposes. The ratio will probably be somewhere around 60-40 in favour of the former but obviously the latter group still represent a massive part of their customer base.

    They have had absolutely no right to do this and they will need to fucking fix it quickly in order to retain that customer base. This is not on.

    I use rapidshre for my downloading and uploading of large audio visual files so that producers/directors can have access to my work with ease and speed.

    It is also a godsend for downloading files when I am not at my own laptop – eg when globetrotting at various offices.

    @nobby – why should I find another site for something perfectly legit? Why should I forgo the £55 subscription for a year of rapidshare because my ISP are clumsy dickheads that have started to kneejerk at the thought of there being illegal content hosted by rapidshare? There are umpteen file sharing sites – rapidshare being the most prolific – but how they can justify doing this is beggars belief.

    Does this not constitute a change to my T&C’s?

    Spark: they have every ‘right’ to do this. Its their service, they can do whatever the fuck with it they want. If people don’t want to use their service, they don’t have to.

    Not like they’re being forced at gunpoint or anything.

    Besides, the user quoted who can’t get to his ‘Website Graphics Packages’ is a bit of a spacktard. If he’s doing this to any decent level he’ll have his own shared host at least, and can just store stuff on there via FTP. Much safer and not reliant on Rapidshit.

    Oh, and just to make things clear, I’m no fan of Virgin media. I think they’re a bunch of facist monkeys and if anybody is bothered about them, they should just move.

    All I can say is, as a recent upgrader to 50Mb – I shall cancel ALL my Virgin services as soon as my
    contract is up. I was considering leaving anyway but this puts the icing on the cake!

    And just to add this post from their forum –

    http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Fibre-optic-broadband-cable/RIDICULOUS-UPLOAD-SPEEDS-AWFUL-CUSTOMER-SERVICE/td-p/52603/page/4

    The OP enquires about the poor line quality and the moderator (Paul) answers the OP and starts questioning other people that have chipped into the conversation threatening action if their usage ‘worsens’.

    RICOCKULOUS.
    Don’t even bother to use their forums because they’ll only scrutinise your usage for airing your views!

    @Angry Bird

    You’ve misinterpreted the mod. He states that he’s going to investigate the load on the UBR, which is the local point of presence. NOT the user.

    I suggest you take a slice of ‘LEARN THE FUCK WHAT YOU’RE ON ABOUT BEFORE RIPPING INTO PEOPLE YOU GIANT COCKTARD PIE’ before posting such bollocks.

    Its working fine now

  18. Posted by lee May 14, 2010 at 10:58 am

    Rapidshare is working again now! Megaupload though is still not!!! >:(

  19. Posted by IfYouCopyMyNameYouAreGayIsGay May 14, 2010 at 11:03 am

    I would suggest, that them not working at all WAS a genuine error.

    An error that occured while they were installing monitoring software onto their routers. If I were you guys, I would be very careful over what you now download from rapidshare/etc, as Virgin ARE watching you. And they have a history of pouncing straight onto illegal downloaders.

  20. We’re not blocking anything, it looks like there’s been a network issue between us and the third party that our networks team are looking into with them at present.

    Dam, got 50mb connection in december and a rapidshare subsrciption.

    To me this is just them doing a test, I fully expect this system to be fully implemented sometime in the future.

    @Alex

    You do realise there isn’t a single person on this Earth that would believe you, with Virgins previous reputation?

  25. Posted by IfYouCopyMyNameYouAreGayIsGay May 14, 2010 at 11:53 am

    @Angry Bird

    You’re welcome. Anytime I can redicule your stupidity, please feel free to ask.

    Or don’t, as I’ll do it anyway.

    “it’s their service they can do as they please”.

    Not really how a contract between a customer and a supplier works.

    I presume you mean “ridicule”, rather than “redicule” which is not actually a word.

    Cuts both ways.
