Tesco try to play dumb on Twitter job squabble

Tesco don’t need to much to incur the wrath of people, especially those online. Twitter went apoplectic overnight as everyone was alerted to a spectacularly lousy job offer. If you didn’t see it, click here. The advert was posted on the Jobcentre Plus website, and offered one lucky applicant the chance to be a nightshift worker for no wage. Worse still, you’d have to live in East Anglia.
Well, after hell broke loose, Tesco have now appeared waving a white flag and shushing everyone while they do their best impression of remorse.
A Tesco spokesman insists that the advert was an honest mistake, and should have been for work experience, rather than a permanent job role.
He said: “The advert is a mistake caused by an IT error by Jobcentre Plus and is being rectified. It is an advert for work experience with a guaranteed job interview at the end of it as part of a government-led work experience scheme.
“We take our responsibility as Britain’s biggest private sector employer seriously. This includes giving young people valuable experience of the workplace, and 300 young people have so far gone on to get permanent employment with us as a result of work experience in recent months, but not as a replacement or substitute for our permanent staff.
“In general, Tesco staff receive a higher level of basic pay than any other supermarket, without exception.”

‘In general’ and ‘without exception’ are oxymorons.

Alexis – I don’t think it’s quite an oxymoron – “in general” would refer to the particular role, and thus implying that the average Tesco shelf stacker gets more than the average Asda shelf stacker, Tesco checkout gets more than Sainsburys checkout, etc – but not guaranteeing it applies to every single possible job (Morrisons manager might get paid more than the Tescos one for example).
And then the ‘without exception’ is extending their claim of better pay to include all other supermarkets in the UK – Budgens, Waitrose, etc.
Still quite a brave claim to make!

I am not overly keen on job seekers doing free Labour for profit making companies. Would much prefer them to be working for council or charity based placements. The only fair way I could see to let a PLC to have free short term staff it that they would be forced to employ at least 1 applicants for every several they try out on these schemes.
I do think people on JSA should work for their money, but it should fairly equal how much they are claiming in the first place to how many hours a week they would have to work. It would be unfair for someone under 25 just claiming £53.45 a week to have work the same hours on placement than some claiming several hundred pound a week. For every £6.08 a person claims on benefit they should do in my opinion a hour week on placement up to a maximum of 30-40 hours a week.

This is a tried and tested method that was used to great success by the Nazis and the Stalinist regime. Get with the program you hippies and wake up to the martial law military junta we’ve elected into power.
I can see a place for jobseekers doing charity or community service type jobs in a much more organised way than they currently do. When I was on JSA last year I did some work in a charity shop and when I told the Jobcentre about it they just said “okay, whatever”. Seems like jobseekers should be encouraged to do this sort of thing a lot more for their own good. I’m not sure making it compulsory is a great idea though, and if it is compulsory it should be two days’ work at the very most (any more would mean they’re working for less than minimum wage”).
If the charities etc want to apply to become part of the scheme they can. Not the supermarkets fault if they are better at taking advantage of situations than charities.
Nothing stopping any of them taking people on under the scheme. It would certainly be a much better idea.

If there’s a proper day’s work to do, someone should get paid to do it. They should also get minimum wage and a contract (even if it’s just a bullshit “permatemp” ripoff contract). There’s no excuse for companies getting work done for nothing. This is just another way to make the little people pay for the sins of an out-of-control private sector.
