Amazon’s lightning deals are hotting up!

November 26th, 2014 No Comments By Mof Gimmers

BLACK FRIDAY1 300x300 Amazons lightning deals are hotting up!As Black Friday gets ever closer, Amazon are kicking things into gear and trying to woo the debit card out of your pocket.

Today, things are really heating up with Amazon’s lightning deals, with a number of good offers on movies, gadgets, clothes, mobiles and more, being offered at knock-down prices.

Instead of hanging around and reading these words, you should hurry your arse up and get over to Amazon as the deals aren’t around for long. That’s why they’re called ‘lightning’ deals, obviously.

To see Amazon’s lightning deals, visit and be sure to hit the ‘upcoming’ tab if you want a little more time to browse the offers.

Happy bargain hunting.

wine Aldi take on the poshos by selling vintage wine for cheap!Every Christmas, Aldi start annoying all their competitors by selling fancy booze for knock-down prices and, this year, they’re wooing the middle classes by taking on Selfridges and the like, by flogging vintage wine for £18.99.

Among their booze offerings, they’re selling something referred to as ‘the king of wines’, which is the six-rated Chateau Pajzos Tokaji Aszu 6 Puttonyos. No. Us neither. We’re assured that it is rare and raved about and a dessert wine from Hungary which won gold from the International Wine Challenge (our invitation to that was lost in the post, clearly).

Aldi have been saying that this wine retails at £76 per bottle and they’re selling it for £18.99. Having a browse online, Selfridges sell the 5 Puttonyos Tokaji for £35.99, which is somewhat inferior to the one being sold by the German supermarket.

If dessert wine isn’t your thing, Aldi are selling Ducastaing 1973 Armagnac for £24.99 and a Glen Marnoch 18 Year Old Single Malt Whisky for £29.99. Considerably cheaper than most other places selling it.

They also have Chevalier XO Cognac for £29.99, Insuperable Solera Gran Reserva Brandy De Jerez for £15.99 and Maynard’s 10 Year Old Tawny Port (bronze medal winner at the International Wine Challenge) for £9.99.

Aldi are so pleased with their prices that they’ve made a little chart for you to read.

Black Friday tips for bargain newbies!

November 25th, 2014 No Comments By Mof Gimmers

BLACK FRIDAY1 300x300 Black Friday tips for bargain newbies! In our quest to point you in the direction of some decent bargains, we’ve put together a little ready-reckoner for Black Friday noobz.

Of course, most Bitterwallet readers are seasoned bargain snufflers who need no help (if we ignore the appalling personal hygiene and social skills issues), but for those new to Black Friday, we’ve got some top tips!

If you’re determined to grab a bargain, you’re going to have to get up early. If you’re mad/brave enough to get down the shops to wrestle someone for a new telly, then you’ll have to start queuing up the night before. If you’re sticking to online sales, then you need to be up bright and early before the shops run out of stock.

Research what you’re after now. If you start panic buying gadgets because they’re cheap, rather than good, then you’ve only yourself to blame. There’s a difference between stuff that is genuinely marked down and stuff the shops couldn’t get rid of last week, but are now throwing in your face because you’re determined to spend some money. Stores also do peculiar things with strategic product placement in their shops on Black Friday, so don’t be wooed by them throwing lousy products at you.

Remember: keep your receipts. The madness of Black Friday might see you lumbered with something rubbish and you can still return things to the shops. You are covered by the Sale of Goods Act 1979, so don’t fret.

There’ll be a lot of fraudsters online this week, so keep an eye out for them. If you’re unsure about the validity of somewhere or a bargain seems too good to be true, then walk away. Stick to the names you know and trust.

There’s going to be a lot of bargains knocking about on Cyber Monday and a good number of people think it’ll offer even more good deals than Black Friday. If you miss out, then you’ve got another day of sales.

Don’t assume that the prices online are the same as the prices in-store on Black Friday. If you’re serious about Black Friday, get down the shops first while checking out the deals online.

If you’re buying clothes, shoes or accessories, Black Friday might not actually be the best time of the year to pick up a bargain (January is usually better). With that, it is worth applying the rule of ignoring anything that offers less than 40% off the full retail price.

Black Friday: imminent bargain trawling

November 24th, 2014 1 Comment By Mof Gimmers

BLACK FRIDAY1 300x300 Black Friday: imminent bargain trawlingWe’ve already given you the heads-up about the best places to keep an eye on for a Black Friday bargain, but what is it all about?

In case you’ve missed the build-up, Black Friday (no-one really knows why it is called that) sees a load of retailers flogging a load of cheap products to everyone – there’s some preposterously great deals to be found, if you’re willing to wade through the pish.

Imagine e-retailers turning themselves into a jumble sale for the day, and you’re halfway there.

Various analysts reckon that £5billion will be spent on the day on things like knock-down tablets and tech, as well as toys, clothes, TVs, video games, fridges and more. Amazon are really getting in the mood, with ‘lightning deals’, as well as announcing that they’re going to be sending out offers through Snapchat.

And next Friday just so happens to be payday for a lot of people, so the rush for bargains is going to be hot.

You’ll see that, at the tail-end of the week, there’s going to be people queueing up outsides shops overnight and businesses hiring extra security to deal with people attacking each other to get their mitts on stuff.

Over in America, they go particularly nuts, as you can see from the video.

In the UK, we’re a bit more reserved, but Stateside, some years ago two men were shot dead when scrapping broke out in a Toys R Us (no seriously) and a Wal-Mart worker was trampled to death in New York as crowds rampaged through the doors.

Sainsbury’s will be joining in Black Friday for the first time this year, and a number of others. We’ll keep you informed as to who will be taking part, who has the best deals and who you shouldn’t bother with. And, following Black Friday, is Cyber Monday, which is effectively the same thing.

Argos have started their countdown, and Amazon have already put some lightning deals up (but appear to be saving the big-guns for later in the week). have already started taking the prices down on women’s fashion items too.

So prep the debit card – it might be doing overtime at the end of the week. Just don’t shoot anyone, okay?

Sneak peak at Black Friday deals

November 21st, 2014 No Comments By Mof Gimmers

BLACK FRIDAY1 300x300 Sneak peak at Black Friday dealsAmazon are giving everyone a sneak peak at some of their Black Friday deals, with tension inducing countdowns and the like.

There’s going to be an offer surrounding the Pebble Smartwatch, 64% off a Kenwood food processor and deals on movies and all manner of stuff.

You can have a look for yourself here, and join ‘waiting lists’ if you’ve really got designs on something in particular.

Meanwhile, Asda are promising big things and contacted Bitterwallet to say that they’ll be “leveraging the buying power of parent company Walmart – renowned for Black Friday deals in the US where the event is worth a whopping $60 billion – to bring earth-shattering deals to customers in the UK.”

Earth shattering eh? One thing they’re very excited about is an offer on quad bikes, where you can get one worth £6,500 for £3,500. If you’re interested in that sort of thing, we’re told the quad is the Coleman 400 ATV 4×4 which has “a fuel injected motorsports engine and independent front suspension and swing arm rear” and a “3.6-gallon fuel tank and 393cc engine has a towing capability of 1200lbs and comes with an electronic winch”.

Whether there’s a big demand for quad bikes remains to be seen.

Asda are keeping Black Friday product details a secret until they are revealed next Thursday on 27th November. There’ll be more information over at Asda’s website, but we’ll round up the best deals they have, so be sure to check out Bitterwallet on the day.

£2.66 a head for Christmas dinner

November 17th, 2014 No Comments By Mof Gimmers

christmas 300x300 £2.66 a head for Christmas dinnerThanks to the increasingly heated rivalry between all the supermarkets, the price of a turkey and the trimmings has fallen. If you’re feeding eight people, the price of your Christmas dinner will be £2.66 a head.

You can recalibrate the cost per head if you’re the kind of person who does Christmas properly and feeds four people with eight people’s worth of food where you all force it all down you like a hoard of gluttons.

Funnily enough, this cost of a Christmas dinner is actually cheaper than a Meal Deal from Tesco.

Anyway, this is the kicker: If you want a turkey, cranberry sauce, four types of vegetables, stuffing and three different desserts, if you shop around you can buy it for £21.31. Last year, according to the Good Housekeeping magazine, it would’ve set you back £21.84 and, in 2009, it would’ve cost £24.

Soon enough, the supermarkets will be so desperate for our custom, they’ll just fire pre-cooked turkey dinners directly into our mouths for free with a t-shirt cannon. Here’s hoping.

Good Housekeeping found that the best priced turkey was £9.99 from Lidl while Aldi are cheapest for sprouts and carrots. As for your Christmas pudding and mince pies, the best is to be found at Sainsbury’s, while Tesco is the place to buy your cranberry sauce. Morrisons, Asda and Tesco all offered stuffing for the same price.

If you can’t be bothered going to all those different shops, then the cheapest single-basket shop is Peter Andre’s Iceland, where you can buy the lot for £27.84, which is £20 cheaper than the most expensive, Marks and Spencer.

Good Housekeeping said: “Budget supermarkets are making a real difference to the cost of our shopping,” adding: “It’s a constant struggle for many to keep family food bills under control, but the current battle between the traditional supermarkets and the discounters is pulling prices down.”

All you have to do now is sharpen your elbows for the inevitable rush in the supermarkets. Remember, Christmas is all about one thing: NO MERCY.

Best places for a Black Friday bargain!

November 17th, 2014 No Comments By Mof Gimmers

BLACK FRIDAY1 300x300 Best places for a Black Friday bargain!Black Friday splits the world into two camps – those that moan about it and those that haven’t heard about it.

Among the whiners, some of those will be grabbing some great bargains. If you haven’t heard of it before, here’s the kicker: The day after America’s Thanksgiving – or if you prefer, the last Friday of November – loads of retailers flog their stock on the cheap.

In the UK last year, there was somewhere in the region of £200m spent, so it really isn’t something to turn your nose up at. Of course, here at Bitterwallet, we’ll be rounding up the best bargains and pointing you in the direction of those who are most likely to give you a proper deal, rather than some poxy 5% off something you don’t want offer.

So, keep it in mind. This year, Black Friday will be on Friday 28th November, with some shops starting their Black Friday deals at the start of the week.

And where are the best places to look for a Black Friday bargain?

Historically, John Lewis have been excellent and featured heavily on past BW round-ups. They always promise to match competitors prices, so definitely one to keep an eye on. So too are Amazon, who really get in the spirit of things after Thanksgiving. This year, Amazon are promising thousands of lightning deals, which doesn’t mean they’re selling lightning in a bottle, but rather, whipping everyone up in a frenzy by having a limited time on offers and the like. They’ll be kicking things off on November 24th.

Argos usually play the Black Friday game, and in 2014, they’ve promised a “huge sale” on toys and gadgets. Should be good for a bargainous Christmas present or two.

One of the companies that really goes crazy for Black Friday is, who have already said: ”You’re going to be getting your hands on some amazing deals on the season’s most wanted gifts and fashion for loads less, so don’t miss out!”

Curry’s/PC World love Black Friday too. Last year, they were selling £150 Beats headphones for £40, so you know there’s going to be a mad rush there. They’re promising more deals on tablets, TVs and washing machines and all that. Asda meanwhile, have regional Black Friday sales, selling insanely cheap items in their stores, so we’ll be keeping an eye on them this year for you. Apple usually get involved too for a small saving here and there, so if you’re thinking of buying an iPad, wait a week.

If you can’t wait for us to start sifting through all the sites for you, then update your bookmarks with this lot.

You can assume that a lot more retailers will be joining in with Black Friday in 2014, seeing as most of them are struggling at the moment, so we’ll keep you in the loop and make sure you don’t miss out on a good bargain.
