Bitterwallet Facebook censorship Conspiracy called as Facebook deletes activist groupsAs has been noted in the past, Facebook is pretty powerful at bringing people together united in a common cause. More than one in two people in the UK now have a Facebook account; its reach and audience is global.

That said, Facebook is hardly immune to corporate pressures. There have been numerous reports over the years of  pages set up by campaign groups that been taken down at the request of big name brands. But now Facebook appears to have cowed down to the political pressures, with the disappearance of over fifty Facebook pages and groups involved in opposing the UK government’s austerity programme.

The groups disappeared on Friday, the day of the Royal Wedding, leading many to believe that it was a deliberate oppression of dissident voices, denied their right to speak out.

Of course there’s the other side of the story; Facebook told the New York Times that the pages were deleted because they were created by fake personal profiles. Facebook don’t have an issue with the groups or their content necessarily, rather that the profiles that created them contravened the sites Terms of Use.

Capitalist conspiracy! Or people not understanding the rules?
