Troubled Republic snatch back Twitter accounts from store staff

5 February 2013

Someone wearing clothes, yesterday

With the weaker members of the high street collapsing left right and centre, could there be further trouble ahead at the beleaguered clothing chain Republic?

Word is reaching us on the grapevine* that the company’s chairman, ex-Asda boss Andy Bond, has bought himself a one-way ticket to Anywhere But Republic after less than two years at the helm.

The same grapevine* tells us that store closures could be in the pipeline as well, grisly news for a company that saw an 86% slump in profits in the year to January 2012, a figure of just £3.7 million.

More eyebrows have been raised at the news that individual Republic store Twitter accounts have been closed down and replaced with a centrally-controlled one instead.

Perhaps someone high up had a look at HMV’s Twitter woes over last week and didn’t fancy a potential repeat. Watch this space for further Republic-flavoured developments…

Who cares. It is cheaper buying the clothing elsewhere.

Since they might be found unemployed if this is true, I think the store staff who work at these stores care Archie.

Hope they don't close down any stores, my local has some cracking eye candy working there.

Is Republic the shop that sells lots of Henleys & other similarly shite brands at over inflated prices?

    Never heard of them.

It's not just Republic. Store 21 have stopped their transactional website and are rumoured to be going in to administration with 200 stores and 1000 staff. La Senza UK and in Europe are to be liquidated with the loss of 1100 staff and 60 uk branches and this is despite making a profit and being purchased out of administration in Jan 2012. Not a good time to be in retail. I do feel sorry for all staff affected. It's pretty shitty to work in retail these days.

Clearly miagi hasn't shopped at republic in years as they stopped selling henleys 2 yrs ago and are actually cheaper than you realise
