Shop charges you if you’re ‘just looking’

When Smokey Robinson and the Miracles advised that you ‘Shop Around’, they clearly weren’t thinking of the highly strung shop-owner in Brisbane who is charging people AU $5 for “just looking”. And yes, they’re a hippie with a chip on their shoulder in a shop called Celiac Supplies, a gluten-free food retailer.

And here is the shop’s warning.

just looking charge 374x500 Shop charges you if youre just looking

The owner, Georgina, said: “I’ve had a gutful of working and not getting paid. I’m not here to dispense a charity service for Coles and Woolworths to make more money.”

“I can tell straight away who are the ratbags who are going to come in here and pick my brain and disappear.”

Lovely use of ‘ratbags’ there. Someone should work out a scam where a number of people enter the shop, but one person buys goods, claiming the $5 refund on everyone with them, thereby getting free stuff AND money out of the till.

This isn’t just in Aus. A guy on Radio 5 last week that runs a furniture store over the road from a coach stop started doing the same to get rid of the old fuckers who come in for a sit down while waiting for their coaches.

So if the people are going elsewhere, how exactly is he going to get the 5 bux?

This seems a similar policy to what Matalan used to have (no membership card meant you are charged £1 entry). Thankfully Matalan came to their senses and are probably doing much better for it.

This is not the way to drive profit figures up. It will likely do the opposite and the shop will end up closing down for sure.

    Nice try, NOT.

Fair enough. But they need a bigger sign and the expectation of losing most of their customer base and walk-in trade.

Having read elsewhere about what they sell, they seem pretty generic. They are a gluten-free food supplier. Such products are commercially available at many other places I’m sure. It’s not like they’re stocking anything particularly unique or original, such as hand crafted furniture or custom order strap ons.

Seems that despite managements claims, their prices are clearly not in line with other stores. If they were reasonable, why would people go to the trouble of buying elsewhere? And if they really had products unique to their store, HOW would customers purchase them elsewhere?

They need to do what every other business is having to do in order to survive and that is to review and revise their pricing to prevent customers shopping elsewhere. It sounds as though they have little to no customer base already, and are in denial about their stock availability and prices. Maybe instead of typing up silly notices they should put their effort into launching promotions to GET people BUYING, not charge them an entry fee. What makes them so bloody special.

Not worked in retail for years thank god but that’s the problem with bricks ‘n’ mortar. People will come in have a look and then buy where it’s cheaper – rightly too.
I used to work in a small PC & Peripherals shop and we always had loads of people coming in for free advice and to pick out brains. We were quite happy with this to a degree – if it was a busy Saturday for example we’d just say, ‘come back when we’re less busy and we’ll do our best to help’.
Otherwise just fuck off the time-wasters!
