HP and Yahoo team up to make printing even more expensive

So everyone should be thrilled to learn that Hewlett-Packard is planning to team up with Yahoo, notably getting on-board with a program that will deliver targeted adverts for stuff printed with the latest line of web-connected printers.

HP have launched some printers last week that are connected to the web which allows users to print content directly from a website or send pages from their phones to a remote printer using an e-mail address specific to said device. In addition to this, there’s also a program called “scheduled delivery” which basically means that, should you wish, you can set a timer up in the morning and your printer will blurt out portions of your daily newspaper in time for you getting up. Sounds entirely pointless doesn’t it?

HP’s ePrint printers (available next month) are connected to your router and your IP address can be used to identify where in the world you are, so localised adverts can be slung your way.

With all this, HP is eyeing up the pennies by allowing targeted ads to go along with the content. They’ve been running trials where consumers received content from a music rag and a newspaper along with advertisements.

Stephen Nigro, senior vice president in HP’s Imaging and Printing Group reckons: “What we discovered is that people were not bothered by it [an advertisement]. You’re used to seeing things with ads.”

While that may be true, this’ll eat the ink in your cartridges and most people don’t want to pay for the printing out of stuff when they’re trying to make you part with even more cash. The targeted ads could invariably centre around people needing to buy more black ink.

Fantastic. I hope it prints off as many pizza menus as I get shoved through my door daily.

Why not just make print cartridges cheaper?

They cost about two quid to manufacture!

I happen to think this is quite a good idea. However, i’m sure the idea will be very quickly superceeded by the wealth of gizmos that are appearing on the market.

Good idea 10 years too late.

Nice, the advert can be a solid black square with a very small smily face in the corner. Good thinking HP.

If I wanted to pay for bits of paper with adverts on, I’d buy a copy of fucking GQ.

  9. Why on earth would I want a machine in my house that I have to pay for, maintain and feed with expensive ink&paper that can be taken control of by some company who will print any old ad for me if someone bungs them a bob. It’s like making you PAY to see the adverts. STUPID idea. Also, anyone who is not tech savvy enough to e-mail themselves the files they want to print, or simple click ‘print’ in a web browser is never gonna be able to successfully use a web-based printer!

What market are they aiming at with this?!

Oh thank god I have a bit of ink & a few sheets of paper to bang out this essential career saving document…

oh fuck an advert for a giant blue smurf costume ……………..NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    CUNTS!

I’m about to take the last Hewlett Packard printer I will ever buy to the local tip. It’s been nothing but trouble, with HP cartridges failing after barely any use. I’ve had nothing but aggro with their garbage for years but now I’m well and truly done with them. HP are truly shit-faced cancerous scum cunts that deserve to go bust ASAP.
