retaildeathwatch Deathwatch: Jessops heading into administrationWord is reaching us that ailing photographic retailer Jessops is about to go into administration. Basically, when Robert Peston tweets about something, it’s definitely happening.

As you can see, 198 stores will be affected with 2,000 staff left wondering how much longer they’ll have a job for. The chain has already been slimmed down with scores of store closures over the past few years, and it remains to be seen what the outcome of the administration move will be.

Jessops has been in that state for a few years now.
Not surprised. Lack of informed staff in recent years hasn’t helped one bit.

Whoa,Kevin. A little bit harsh. I grant that the training they give is diabolic but myself am a pro photographer (I work 12hrs to for my rent ‘safety blanket’) however, have a thought for 2 thousand people who will probably have no job.

I disagree with many things the company does, including employing mostly Phone company managers but don’t blame the staff. Blame the managers with the stupid pricing and THEY are the ones to give no training whatsoever.

  5. Well said person above! I work at jessops as team leader, I run my own professional business outside of work & am very knowledgeable & would be happy to help anyone through my door. Don’t blame the staff, blame the management.

Its a shame. The newly redesigned stores they opened before Christmas are awfully nice.

What a shame. There will be a lot of bitterness around and a lot of faithful staff out of a job who have tried their damnedest to help their customers for years with little or no back up.

Senior managers have totally miss-understood their customers needs and have just worried about sales. Yes there have been hard decisions to make at the top but they don’t appear to have been the right ones.

thanks Tim, I have worked as a manager for Jessops for a number of years, and we try and train our staff, but not every one is of the same mind set. I have been told less than nothing…. We at my store have gone out of our way for the customer for the 5 yrs I have been there. but we can do nothing except “price match local” and this does not give us the help, when our own internet sight is cheaper than the store, the higher ups seem to live in another world, its been tough.

you should see a doctor about that!
you will be waiting forever! I have ones from last year still waiting hehe..

Too expensive compared to other places online for virtually everything. Majority of people go for the cheapest deal they can get, and search for support on forums and youtube How To videos for free.

Buy something from Jessops and you’re paying for some guy in ‘pointy shoes’ to walk around looking managerial all day. No thanks.

Hope the floor staff can find work elsewhere though, good luck!

Very sorry for the staff. People on here should not be so smug. At this rate there won’t be a high street. I suspect and hate to say it HMV will be next and don’t be surprised if OpCapita decide to pull the plug from Game.

Fuck em all is what I say; if you don’t work hard at school you end up working a shop and shit like this happens.

  17. Posted by shiftynifty January 9, 2013 at 8:36 pm

Trouble is ….most of these retailers are like oil tankers…too fucking slow to turn around and see whats coming
Yep HMV not long for these shores…..And I can see a really big retailer going tits up this year…the guessing game has started

I don’t reckon we will be seeing Thorntons stores on high street much longer…

I have devastating inside information about the future of Halfords stores. Apparently they aren’t in any danger of going under anytime soon.

All this talk about poor management or poor staff.
    What undereducated rubbish.
Don’t people know that places like Amazon and Play pay little or no tax?
Don’t contribute to our schooling, NHS, social welfare, prison costs, defence and anti-terrorist activity?
Don’t they know that most online retailers only have warehouses or get the distributors/ manufacturers to ship direct to customers?
Don’t they know that shop rents and rates are huge?
Don’t they know that warehouse wages are half those of shop personnel, (because many operations are in low cost locations)?
Of course the retail sector is going down!
    It’s inevitable.
Not possible to compete on ordinary consumer goods.

Hopefully SCS next, the cnuts. More staff than customers, usually hiding behind the sofas ready to pop up like an erect penis

I agree with Sicknote, kill them all now.
