Barclaycard to offer 2 for 1 on falconry lessons
Does your inbox bulge with crappy Groupon and Wowcher offers for an hour of Reiki at Sandra’s Salon in Chigwell? Well now Barclaycard is about to give customers even more unwanted spa deals with their new ‘Bespoke Offers’ service, which launches today.
You’d think it’d be pitched a little higher than the usual 2 for 1 offers at Nandos, but you’d be wrong. Barclaycard members will be offered ‘spectacular’ savings such as £5 for £10 at Starbucks, 5p off per litre of petrol at Shell and a 3 for 2 dry cleaning offer at Johnsons. Whoo-hoo. Aspirational!
Barclaycard, though, have one over on the Groupons and Living Socials of this world- they can look at your credit card bills to see what crap you like to buy and tailor the offers accordingly. Using this information, they hope to combat 'offer fatigue' - a condition that occurs when you get 6 emails in a row about fish pedicures.
This is an early example of the financial services industry trying to crack the already saturated daily deals market. It’s also a taste of things to come, according to the UK Cards Association, who say online deals will become more prevalent amongst card issuers.
Barclaycard says the 5000 daily deals they offer could save up to £2,100 per household per year – that’s if you can be bothered taking them up.
But be honest, are you going to go to all the trouble of buying a deal online, printing it out and taking it to the Shell garage to get 5p off? I can feel offer fatigue kicking in already...
