BT launch phone that will block majority of nuisance callsFebruary 7th, 2013 • 8 Comments
People phoning you up about PPI claims while you’re having your tea is enough to make you beat yourself to death with the handset. With that, BT want to help with the launch of the BT6500 telephone.
Sadly, it isn’t a phone that has a handset designed with thrashing yourself unconscious, but rather, a phone that will stop you getting nuisance calls from marketers and withheld number swines.
They could help by not selling your information on to these people in the first place, but there you go.
What happens is that you, phone owner, programmes specific numbers that you’d like blocked. Any that get through, can be met with Eric Morcambe’s way of dealing with it, by picking up the handset and flatly telling the caller that “there’s no phone here, sorry,” before hanging up.
This is a real problem though as over 50,000 calls are made to Nuisance Calls Advice Line each month, as well as over 3,000 complaints being made to Ofcom per month. And so, with this new BT6500 phone, you can apparently block anyone without a caller ID, withheld numbers, any overseas number and those that you have the number of, who you’d like to avoid.
John Petter, managing director of BT’s consumer division, said: “When people feel as though they are being harassed in their own homes they need to be able to take action. We believe this phone gives customers the peace of mind that when the phone rings it should be someone they want to speak to.”

Nonsense. The more calls people make the better, so they’re not going to block them and lose money. You have to pay to use this new ‘service’, so instead of the telemarketers paying BT, YOU have to pay them instead!!
And who makes the software used by nuisance callers? Step forward BT.
These are the only calls I receive and are a lifeline for me. As an obese bedbound person I really enjoy my hour long chats to these interesting and skilled ppl. Sometimes i get hard too which is / was and unforseen advantage, until i started milkin it.
I had a phone call from BT telling me about this phone. A bloody nuisance, they was.
I purchased a Truecall couple years back. Best money I ever spent. Expensive yes, but completely stops nuisance phone calls.
I work nights and sleep during the day often too, so not getting woken up to a double glazing call or a auto dialer is a god-send.
im amazed people still have a home phone.
Well played BT! Get people to buy your ‘new’ phone, even though anyone can stop cold caller’s getting through to you simply by registering with TPS… For FREE!
BT can of course block this shite on-network anyway by detecting systems that are just trawling through numbers, and providing an easy-to-use way of reporting nuisance calls.
Except they decided long long ago that they’d rather not.
