It was so bad that they were giving it away free with a HD+ purchase in America. Therefore it was probably inevitable that a UK firesale was on the cards.

For the past few days many UK retailers have been selling the Nook Simple Touch for £29 which is an incredible discount based on an RRP of £79. This item was featured over at HotUKDeals and listed for sale by Argos, John Lewis, Currys, PC World and Blackwell’s. The listings all went live around the same time so it would seem that Barnes & Noble had been in touch with these sellers to let them know that they should really look to shift some units.

Many members of the HotUKDeals forums flocked to Blackwell’s to place their orders. One member of HotUKDeals received the following email from Blackwell’s shortly after placing their order:

I can advise that this offer has been very popular and we are currently receiving hundreds of orders so processing has been slow.
We will be despatching the Nooks in the order in which customers placed their orders though I can advise that we have received more orders than we currently have stock but more stock is due in by the end of the week and a further batch next week so all orders will be fulfilled by the end of next week.

At this point I regret we cannot state for definite when your order will be fulfilled but should be supplied by the end of next week at the latest.

Kind Regards,

Olie

So, all being well, the order will be fulfilled by the end of next week at the latest because presumably Blackwell’s have lined up some stock and they know for sure that this is due in. Sadly that no longer seems to be the case as HotUKDeals have since received the following email from an agency on behalf of Blackwell’s:

I have had confirmation from Blackwell’s that the Nook sales are to be cancelled due to the unprecedented demand for the Nook product from this offer.  Blackwell’s are just one of many Nook stockists and this offer was across the board, Curry’s, Argos and other book suppliers that stock it all placed it at this price, it seems there are no e-readers at all left anywhere in the UK. I appreciate that this is not an ideal situation at all, I can only reassure you that these were circumstances beyond their/our control, and that this will be avoided at all costs in the future.

Remarkably Blackwell’s continued to take order after order before then making effort to see what stock was available elsewhere in the UK (whether that was direct from Barnes & Noble or elsewhere). So now it would appear that they are not going to be receiving any further stock next week (despite the previous reassurance) and that leaves them in the very unenviable position of having to explain to hundred of disgruntled customers that they will not be getting a Nook and now look set to miss out completely as, by the own admission, there is no further stock anywhere in the UK.

Over to you, Blackwell’s.
