Airbags for smartphones?

Some bright spark has patented the idea for an airbag for smartphones, which obviously, would see your phone protected if you dropped it on the floor like the thundering, clumsy idiot you are.
The patent states that the technology would take advantage of the phone’s gyroscope, camera and accelerometers so it can detect whether it is falling or not.
“Prior to impact between a surface and a device, a determination of a risk of damage to the device is made,” reads the patent. “If the risk of damage to the device exceeds a threshold, a protection system is activated to reduce or eliminate damage to the device.”
What do you think? Is it a smart idea or is it dumb as shit? This patent has been filed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, no less, should you want some kind of background for your views.

What happens if you go on Oblivion?
Cue hundreds off people stepping off a rollercoaster and throwing a strop at the attendant because it’s going to cost them £120 to have their airbag reset.
What happens when this goes off in your front pocket and it blows your ballbag down your trouser leg…?
Will it be able to tell the difference between being dropped and me jumping down the last couple of stairs because I’m late for work and my phones in my pocket? Can’t see this idea working!
Bit vague to be a patent in my opinion, but hey.
Reminds me of making parachutes for toy soldiers and launching them off the bridge.
What happens if it’s in a case?
Stupid idea.
So every time I throw my phone onto my sofa or bed, it’s gonna deploy airbags?..
Sorry my mistake. I read this as Funbags not airbags.
