A hard bargain? 1 in 3 Argos sale televisions used to cost less

By Paul Smith

We told you last week how a high street sale doesn’t necessarily guarantee a saving – the law allows a certain degree of flexibility on how price comparisons are advertised. Argos is a prime example; we highlighted items that were part of their clearance sale that were in fact cheaper before the sale started.

How many items in the current clearance have previously been available for less than the current sale price? HUKD member antj87 trawled through the Home Entertainment section of the Argos website, and found nine of the 52 items were previously available for less, and a closer look reveals that one in three of the clearance televisions were sold for less before the sale:

argo 2 A hard bargain? 1 in 3 Argos sale televisions used to cost less

We know there’s little point crying over spilt milk, and unless you’re knocking up a quantum leap accelerator in the garage, there’s little chance of travelling back in time and snapping up the cheaper bargain. Just remember that a sales doesn’t guarantee cheaper products and more importantly, if a product was recently on sale for the lower price, another retailer might still be selling it for that price, so always shop around.

Keep up the good work bitterwallet. Its good for sites like this to draw attention to crafty sales techniques.

I agree you’ve got to make more consideration to your audience. At least Argos state fairly clearly what price the televisions were previously. I welcome that.

Who in the name of Holy Fuck would buy a Bush branded product?

“Hello, I’d like to buy a really cheap nasty TV please.”
“Certainly sir, do you have any idea as to what you’d like?”
“I’m looking for something with no styling that looks as though it was designed by a blind, quadriplegic 2 year old”
“We have plenty of those sir, a bit more specific perhaps?”
“Hmmm, I’m looking for something that will break down at least twice a year.”
    “A little bit more specific?”
“Possibly something to get the excitement back in my life, one that will spontaneously erupt into flames and burn my family to death if they’re not quick enough off the mark?”
“Ahhh, You’ll be after a Bush then, what size….”
