Aviva quote the unquotable for car insurance

Car insurance is a money vampire at the best of times; at the worst of times, it’ll make you weep tears of despair. Or, in the case of avid Bitterwallet reader Daniel and Aviva, laugh your tits off.

Daniel doesn’t have any no-claims bonus on his side, but then neither is he in a high-risk category for insurance. With that in mind then, he wasn’t expecting the following quote for a 1.6 Honda Civic:

Bitterwallet Aviva quote Aviva quote the unquotable for car insuranceStill scooping his jaw off the floor, Daniel told Bitterwallet:

“I phoned up their sales line, gave them the online reference number – and the call assistant sounded shocked as you would expect – with a figure like that popping up on their screen. I then asked if he could do any better than £10,575 – as this must be an error.  He spoke to his supervisor and came back to say that this is the best they could do! He said “we don’t cover people like you.” Excuse me – You must do! Otherwise you would not have provided a quote in the first place.

The best solution would be for the online system to simply return with a message to say that we won’t be able to cover you, than to spew out some ridiculous premium!”

Daniel also points out the quote is up to ten times higher than other quotes he received. Are Aviva being overly cautious or are they working on the principle that there are always people rich enough and stupid enough to catch out with their ludicrous premiums?

Glad I don’t have anything to do with this industry.

just yesterday I got a quote of 1900 from admiral. I made a few minor adjustments and it dropped to 1500. Then I did the quote via confused and it dropped to 1200 (with Admiral).

    Go figure.

I called them up once and asked them to “quote me happy” and the man goes £7800, he did not even sound shocked :s

got a bike renewal on satdy, £335 with aviva.
got a bike quote on satdy, £126 with aviva.

    wtf?!

I agree that they should just tell you upfront that you are not the type of customer that they want to insure. Unfortunately the fact that you have no NCD implies either you are an inexperienced driver or a ‘crash prone’ driver! I imagine your wallet is gonna take a beating if you want to insure a 100+ bhp motor.
Not wishing to gloat, but Aviva quoted me happy last night with the lowest quote that i have found this year AND topcashback are offering £60.60 for it too! Hope you find something cheap mate!!

Yeah if you have 0 years NYD and you’re a new driver don’t go for a 1.6 – stay with a safe 1.0 or 1.2. I have 5 years NCD and Aviva still screw me every year with quotes

If they were to say “no sorry we don’t cover you” then you would have to say you have been refused insurance, which won’t do your premium any good. So best you just look, laugh and go elsewhere.

    Don’t go for a 1.6? 1.6 isn’t exactly a ferrari.

  11. Posted by spanks January 27, 2011 at 12:44 pm

Meh, they inflate the premiums on certain demographics depending what demographic they are targeting. I.e. if they want to introduce a lot of high premiums but then expect a high number of claims they “lower” the margin by a couple of percent for male drivers 18-25. Where if they want medium premiums but less hassle with claims they increase the above demographic group by of percentage points to put you off.

It’s the same for all insurance types.

Look for a company that’s not trying to actively discourage you from shopping with them, Elephant were none too bad for a male 3rd party 23 on a class 12 car.

    Stupid tax.

Aviva are a joke! I’d use their quotes a lotto number generators. All about Adrian Flux baby! I got a modded Corsa, with full tints, and they quoted a 1/2k less than everyone else.

They did this to me… Well not as bad. They wanted me to pay £1500 PY for home insurance. When I explained Directline’s quote was more like £350 he just said “you shoul go with them then”.

  15. Posted by _stu_ January 27, 2011 at 1:29 pm

Mazda Matt: you’re making huge assumptions there. I have no no-claims bonus, my company will not send the insurer a letter saying I have been claim free for the last 5 years and I am just about 40 and live in Oxford (which is apparently one of the cheaper areas of the country).

  16. Posted by Jamlid January 27, 2011 at 1:36 pm

    Nah Aviva are just shite.

  17. Posted by Nick T January 27, 2011 at 2:11 pm

I was with Aviva for home insurance. When the renewal came around the premium had increased by 20%. Churchill were cheaper so I called Aviva to cancel. Their Bangalore call centre drone instantly said they’d match Churchill’s price. I said with huge satisfaction that they were ripping me off with the renewal price then, and swapped to Churchill anyway.

The following year I decided not to renew with Churchill because they were obstinate twats over a small claim, and went back to Aviva who were cheaper than they had been two years before. I quite look forward to October’s annual review now.

@Shaun – Adrian Flux are a broker, mate.

@ arriva trains: To be fair, Shaun drives as Corsa with highlights. He cannot be expected to know that.

Insurance companies are always a rip off. Insurance salesmen are up there with politicians and bankers in my book.

  22. Posted by Russ January 27, 2011 at 8:32 pm

I’d imagine if they did Quidco on this, it would be fantastic!

I insured with First Direct, they will beat your renewal by 10%

Yeah, get a 1.2l car then put loads of bits of plastic body kit all over it preferably all of different colours so it looks like it’s just been puked up, a baked bean tin on the exhaust, black out the windows, add a huge cheap stereo that just distorts whatever you play on it to the point that it just sounds like one long fart and it trebles the actual speed of the car, it’s brilliant. It also has the added advantage that anyone that can drive knows that you’re a dangerous driver and avoids you like the plague.

Thats why I always tell them my main residence is the Vatican

Knocks 90% off my bill everytime.

    Keep it hush hush though.

  25. Posted by PaganWolf January 28, 2011 at 4:51 pm

@ Mazda Matt – I have no no-claims bonus. I’ve been driving for a while now, not had any accidents, but I share a car with my husband. He is the primary driver so he gets all the no-claims. You cannot make broad sweeping statements like that. There are many reasons that people don’t have any.

  26. Posted by rob January 28, 2011 at 9:41 pm

adrian flux were shit with me tbh.

bell seem cheapest for young drivers

  27. Posted by having a good time January 29, 2011 at 5:26 am

I agree that Bell/Elephant/Admiral are good for young drivers, I’m 25, with no no-claims and 3 points and they were by far the cheapest when looking for insurance for my MR2 (which is only a 1.6 and is group 13; go figure).

  28. Fantastic points altogether, you simply won a new reader. What would you suggest about your publish that you simply made some days in the past? Any certain?
